Anthropology of Language

Catalog description

This course is an introduction to the foundational relationship between language and its wider social and cultural context. In this course, we will work at the intersection of linguistics and anthropology to study the logic behind linguistic systems (e.g., grammar and vocabulary), the activities in which those systems are used, and how these systems reflect and create thought. We will also focus on how language is used to establish and maintain social dynamics (e.g., power, race, gender, and class) and its role during processes of socialization, globalization, and domination. This class will be taught in Spanish. Satisfies Hispanic Studies major and minor requirement.
