This class explores language as a social and dynamic phenomenon that reflects the idiosyncrasies of those who produce it. Drawing on both theory and direct analysis of primary sources, we will study the linguistic behavior of Spanish speaking communities in Latin America, Spain and the United States as determined by sociocultural factors that influence linguistic production: historical, ethnic and cultural factors, contexts of production, and individual features such as gender, age, social class, economic status, or professional occupation.
