Theoretical Explorations of Community Engagement

Catalog description
An examination of community engagement through a range of theoretical lenses. After interrogating constructions of “community,” “service,” and “civic engagement,” we will explore the ways in which topics such as social justice, civic engagement, empowerment, diversity, and the ethics of service frame community work. Specific enactments of community involvement are explored including philanthropy, volunteerism, social entrepreneurship, and activism with a focus on leadership and change. Satisfies a major or interdisciplinary minor requirement in Communication Studies. Satisfies the Social-Scientific Thought requirement. Satisfies the Justice, Equality, and Community requirement.
