The field of Disability Studies has grown and evolved significantly in recent years, moving beyond its origins as a subspecialty of Medical Sociology. Today, it is a multidisciplinary field that draws on a broad range of perspectives to offer valuable insights into disability as a social, cultural, and political phenomenon. Disability Studies challenges conventional views that pathologize people with disabilities and fosters critical reflection on the role of disability in society. In this course, we will explore the topic of disability through a sociological lens, examining the social construction of disability and impairment, the stigma associated with disability, the social position of disabled bodies, intersectionality and disability, the politics of disability, and relevant theoretical perspectives. Our goal is to interrogate preconceptions and misconceptions about disability, promote critical thinking, and explore possibilities for positive change. Satisfies Sociology major requirement.
