Catalog description

This course explores religion in Chinese societies during the tumultuous period between the late nineteenth and early twenty-first centuries. We will analyze the historical and cultural foundations of Chinese religion; the role of the state, intellectual, and political groups in shaping official religiosity; and the bewildering variety of religious traditions in contemporary Chinese societies. Satisfies the Philosophical and Religious Perspectives requirement. Satisfies East Asian Studies major and interdisciplinary minor requirement. Satisfies Chinese Studies Minor.
