Catalog description

The history and development of Buddhism in America. Topics include the American Transcendentalists and “Eastern” thought, Buddhism and the Theosophists, the World Parliament of Religions of 1893, the “Zen boom” of the Beat generation, the varieties of Buddhism imported by Asian immigrants beginning in the 1960s, and modern “American Buddhist” communities and practices. Satisfies the Philosophical and Religious Perspectives requirement. Satisfies the cultural diversity requirement.
