The course begins with a close reading (and performance) of the Book of Revelation. We then examine the patterns of thinking encouraged by the Book of Revelation, from the periodization of history in Joachim of Fiore, to the uses of demonization in the Protestant Reformation, fundamentalist Christianity’s prediction of the endtimes and its intersection with American culture and politics, culminating in the wheels within wheels thinking seen in phenomena like the QAnon Conspiracy. The course includes film and literary components. Satisfies the Philosophical and Religious Perspectives requirement.
