International Political Economy

Catalog description

This course encompasses the intersection of political and economic forces. It begins with the core concepts of international monetary and international trade theory, then pursues topical issues related to economic international relations between and among countries. Among the questions we address: Why do currencies go “up” or “down,” and with what implications? How do financial crises begin and spread? Who are the winners and losers from international trade, and how does it affect human welfare? The course will also cover topical issues such as the function and impact of the international financial organizations, income inequality, and the relationship between democracy and open markets. The course will look into at least two country case studies to analyze the application of these issues in practice. This course is not quantitative, and no prior economics experience is required. This class is not open to students who have already taken ECO 288. Satisfies Philisophy, Politics, and Economics major requirement. Satisfies the Social-Scientific Thought requirement.
