Kalin War reporting has transformed in the 21st century, shaped by the complex global conflicts following the attacks of Sept. 11 as well as rapid developments in technology and the broader media landscape. This course examines the shifting dynamics of news reporting in a digitally connected world, where media plays a key role in shaping government policies and public narratives around war. Through case studies from the Middle East, Ukraine and elsewhere, this course will give students insight into the practices and challenges of war reporting and help them critically assess media coverage including for issues of bias, disinformation and ethical dilemmas. It introduces foundational news writing techniques and requires students to both regularly consume international news and participate robustly in class discussions. The course is taught by this year’s Batten professor, who has reported from the frontlines of international conflicts for more than a decade.
