Catalog description

In this course we compare and evaluate conceptions of the self in a variety of philosophical traditions. Questions include: Does the self exist? If so, what sort of thing is it? Could I survive the death of my body? Do I extend beyond the boundaries of a particular mind or body? In what sense, if any, is the self a social construct? Is genuine altruism possible, or is all action ultimately aimed at benefitting the self? Counts as an elective for the Philosophy major and minor Satisfies the Philosophical and Religious Perspectives requirement. Satisfies the cultural diversity requirement.
