Catalog description

Cross-cultural study of musical styles, roles, and performance practices in religious belief systems and sacred rituals around the world. Thematic issues include: explicit and implicit relationships between musical substance and ideology; music as a tool for expressing, preserving, and empowering sacred texts; music as a means of structuring ritual; and the power of music to transform experience. Satisfies a South Asian Studies minor requirement. Satisfies the Visual and Performing Arts requirement. Satisfies the cultural diversity requirement. Prerequisites & Notes No music training required. Normally offered in alternate years.
