Catalog description

This course will explore the social contexts of music and musicians on the social media app TikTok. Students will use TikToks and other short-form videos to study concepts like taste, fandom, person, and social relationship. Further, students will consider the impacts of Virality on both the popular music industry and US popular culture “broadly defined.” Satisfies the Visual and Performing Arts requirement. Prior topics include: Styles - Avant Garde since 1900 Instructor Fried A topical survey of musical thought and practice in the 20th and 21st centuries, with particular attention paid to notions of innovation in a musical context, their origins and effects: the exploration of extended techniques and exploitation of new technology; the influence of an increasingly mechanized sonic environment; concordant movements in art and philosophy; emerging notions of an Avant Garde; and evolving social constructions of composer, performer, and audience. Satisfies the Visual and Performing Arts requirement. Prerequisites & Notes Repeatable for credit.
