Studies of Composers and Styles: Methods in Music Studies

Catalog description

This course offers a hands-on and project-based introduction to methods in music studies, including approaches to ethnography, fieldwork, archival research, documentation, and portfolio building. Students will attend, observe, and write about rehearsals and performances in and around Davidson as part of a broader process of developing a field site through research, interviews, and audio/visual recordings. Course readings will engage scholarship ranging from ethnographic accounts, to theorizations of field sites, to practical guides on conducting fieldwork research. Student projects will include interviews, photo essays, concert reviews, autoethnographies, and a semester-long fieldwork project. Prerequisites & Notes Repeatable for credit. Certain topics count for the Gender and Sexuality Studies major.
