Catalog description
Charts the development of the distinctly American styles produced by the combination of African and European characteristics. The music is approached from a historical standpoint, beginning with the musical forms, styles and instruments in African and ending with current trends in the music of both cultures, and also from the standpoint of appreciation through educated listening. Music to be studied include slave songs, gospel, blues, jazz, and rap. Satisfies Africana Studies major requirement Satisfies Visual and Performing Arts requirement
