Women, Gender, and Sexuality in Japan

Catalog description

In this seminar we will explore a variety of historical, ethnographic, and theoretical materials on how gender and sexuality have been culturally constructed and experienced in Japan from the nineteenth century until the present day. Course topics include the gendered dimensions of Confucianism, marriage, paid employment and unpaid work, parenting, war, political activism, structural power, and popular culture in Japan. The course will also cover the political, social, and economic challenges that Japanese women and the Japanese LGBTQ+ community continue to face. Satisfies History major and minor requirement. Satisfies East Asian Studies major and minor requirement. Satisfies Gender and Sexuality Studies major and minor requirement. Satisfies Justice, Equality, and Community requirement. Prerequisites & Notes Juniors and Seniors only until the first day of class.
