History of Modern China

Catalog description

This course explores the major political, social, economic, religious, and cultural developments in China from the late imperial period until the present day. Course readings, films, and assignments focus on how Chinese intellectuals, women’s rights activists, farmers, artists, and environmentalists defined what it meant to be “modern,” and how their understandings of “modernity” shifted over time. Counts as a “Non-Western” course in the History Major. Counts as an elective in the History major and minor. Counts as an elective in the East Asian Studies major and minor.
