World War II in European History and Memory, 1939-1990

Catalog description

The devastation of Europe following World War II almost defies comprehension: between 35 and 40 million Europeans killed; millions more missing, homeless, or displaced; and entire countries in ruins. In this course, we will explore how the war transformed three combatant nations in particular: France, Germany, and the Soviet Union. In each country, we will examine the conflict as it was experienced by everyday citizens, both civilians and soldiers alike. We will then turn our attention to the postwar period, and examine how the war’s memory has shaped politics and culture in Europe ever since. Satisfies History major and minor requirement. Satisfies Historical Thought requirement.
