Rebels and Radicals: Art and Politics in France, 1789-1940 weaves together the history of the French artistic and intellectual avant-gardes with the upheaval of political, social, sexual, and anti-colonial/anti-racist revolutions. From the barricades of 1830 to the Moulin Rouge in the 1890s to Americans in Paris in the 1920s, we explore the connection between art and politics in France, particularly in the countercultural artistic realms known as Bohemia. We investigate the shifting relationship in French culture between political radicalism and artistic rebellion from the Revolution of 1789 through the Jazz Age. Satisfies History major and minor requirement. Counts as an elective in the French and Francophone Studies major ( prior departmental approval required.) Satisfies the Historical Thought requirement.
