Catalog description

What economic, social, and political challenges did individual East Asian states and the East Asian region as a whole face between 1850 to the present? To address this question, this course traces the modern history of political, economic, social, and cultural change in China, Japan, and Korea. We will focus on state building, women’s roles in society, economic development, colonialism, social change, war, revolution, nationalism, communism, globalization, and environmental issues. We will examine each state not just in the context of its own historical development, but also as part of the broader East Asian region. Counts as a “Non-Western” course in the History major. Counts as an elective in the History minor. Satisfies a requirement for the East Asian Studies major and minor. Satisfies the Historical Thought requirement. Satisfies the Cultural Diversity requirement.
