Catalog description

This course examines the history of Europe from the late eighteenth century through the 1960s, and assesses how modern entities such as the nation state and the individual fared in the face of industrialization, urbanization, the rise of nationalism, imperialism, two world wars, and their aftermath. These histories are read through the eyes of writers, artists, politicians, workers, and others, as we attempt to discern how Europeans in each era perceived, described, and made sense of the experience of modern life. We also trace the development and deployment of modern Western categories of race, class, and gender. Satisfies History major and minor requirement. Satisfies the Historical Thought requirement.
