High and Late Middle Ages

113 (High & Late Middle Ages) is the second half of a 2-semester sequence beginning with HIS 112 (Early Medieval Europe). Chronological coverage will be roughly from 1000-1400. Topics covered include the development of feudalism, crusades to the Holy Land, emerging towns and monarchies, the twelfth-century Renaissance, new spiritual movements (Cistercians, Franciscans, Dominicans, Beguines), Gothic architecture and scholastic philosophy, fourteenth-century Black Death, and late medieval mysticism. Over the course of the semester, each student will read, write about, and discuss a number of primary sources, including a major text of interest to the student, not on the syllabus but chosen in concert with the instructor. Satisfies History major and minor requirement. Satisfies Historical Thought requirement.
