Mediterranean Ecologies

What insights can Mediterranean ecologies offer in the context of today’s ecological and migration “crises”? In this course, students will explore how Mediterranean environments are represented in literature and visual art from Morocco, Algeria, and Southern France. Rather than emphasizing borders and national frameworks, the class will investigate how ecologies and nonhuman agents such as the sea, the desert, plants, stones, and the subterranean world intersect with gender, migration, and social justice in the region. Through a variety of media (literature, film, photographs, paintings, podcasts), students will examine how the environment is not neutral and think collectively and creatively about the environment in the Mediterranean. Satisfies French and Francophone Studies major and minor requirement. Satisfies Arab Studies major and minor requirement. Satisfies the Literary Studies, Creative Writing, and Rhetoric requirement. Satisfies the Cultural Diversity requirement. Prerequisites & Notes One French coruse numbered 220 or above.
