In this course, we will immerse ourselves in the captivating world of the cyberpunk genre, where futuristic dystopias, advanced technology, and societal upheaval collide. Cyberpunk, a subgenre of speculative fiction, offers a unique lens through which to explore themes of technology, surveillance, rebellion, and the human condition. Our primary texts will include iconic works such as William Gibson’s “Neuromancer,” Neal Stephenson’s “Snow Crash,” Philip K. Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?,” and others. While these narratives are set in fictional futures, they provide thought-provoking commentary on the consequences of technological advancement, surveillance states, and the blurred lines between humanity and artificial intelligence. Each text offers a distinctive perspective on the cyberpunk genre, offering rich material for analysis and discussion. The course is designed to deepen students’ understanding of cyberpunk literature and its capacity to critique and reflect upon contemporary technological and societal issues. Through an intensive study of each text, students will examine the genre’s portrayal of technology’s impact on individuals and society, as well as its exploration of themes such as identity, corporate power, and rebellion. By delving into the cyberpunk genre, students will not only gain a deeper appreciation for this unique form of speculative fiction but also develop a heightened awareness of the ways literature can reflect and shape our perceptions of the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
