ENG 243
Infinity in Early English Lit
Davidson College · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
With the arrival of technologies like the telescope and microscope, early modern authors began to explore the newfound reality of an infinite universe. In this course, we will investigate how English baroque authors imagined the infinite and grappled with its implications for religion, politics, and society. Each week, we will approach literature as a tool for exploring the infinite and its related concepts, including chaos, excess, and the multiverse. Satisfies the LTRQ Ways of Knowing requirement.
