Debate and Deliberation
Davidson College · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course will teach students how to navigate contentious issues during a time of upheaval and uncertainty and help them develop the skills and understanding to know when debate or deliberation is the best way to grapple with a complex-emotionally-charged subject. We will explore why anger and passion can sometimes be used as effective tools - when challenged properly - to effectively communicate across difference, as well as how to determine when disengagement is more effective than engagement, and vice versa. This course is designed for students ready to grapple with how to maintain critical thinking skills through discomfort. Satisfies Communication Studies major and minor requirement.
