Catalog description

This course is designed for non-science majors interested in learning about the world around them through the lens of chemistry. The course contains lectures and labs that center on scientific concepts to explain both nature and human-created phenomena. Topics potentially covered in CHE 107 include, but are not limited to, the following: What is a chemical?, The air we breathe and its contents, The world of plastics and polymers, Light’s interaction with matter, and the Chemistry associated with global climate change. Each week’s laboratory period will focus on applying topics learned during lecture, while developing students’ abilities to critically analyze experimental observations and effectively communicate results. The course assumes zero or limited previous exposure to chemistry and does not count toward a major in chemistry or for pre-medical requirements. Satisfies Natural Science requirement. Prerequisites & Notes Students cannot have taken CHE 110 or above
