Genetics, Disability, and Gender Identities

Catalog description

This course explores the basic science and the often non-inclusive language frameworks traditionally used by scientists and science journalists related to disability and differences across gender identities and sexual orientations. Addressing these frameworks is a crucial next step toward making the field of biology more welcoming. The course will explore research on genetic contributions to selected human variations, examining ethical implications and consciously dissecting terminology choices in articles geared for general and scientific audiences. Perspectives from Disability Studies and Gender & Sexuality Studies will enable bridging of sometimes conflicting paradigms between the social and natural sciences. Students will develop a foundation in the genetic and environmental complexities of human traits that will enable critical analysis of sociopolitical claims regarding these topics. Satiafies Biology major requirement. Satisfies a major and minor requirement in Gender and Sexuality Studies in the Society and Politics track. Satisfies Justice, Equality, and Community requirement. Prerequisites & Notes Successful completion of BIO 111/113/115 is required.
