Applied Insect Ecology

Catalog description

This group investigation course examines applied ecology problems in insect populations and communities, which may be adversely affected in an urbanizing landscape. Students will investigate the effects of some aspect of urbanization or human activity on insect diversity and abundance. Projects have community-based learning and outreach components, and students may work closely with members of the community, including landowners, County officials, and staff of local lands conservancies. Students study advanced concepts in insect population and community ecology, insect identification, and hone skills in field biology, experimental design, data analysis, and science communication. Satisfies Environmental Studies major and minor requirement for Natural Science track Prerequisites & Notes Successful completion of one of the following: BIO 112, BIO 114, or ENV 201. Permission of instructor is required.
