Catalog description

This class will explore the genetic, neurological, ecological, and social factors that influence the way animals behave. We will survey broad categories of behavior while diving deep into some of the most mysterious and astonishing animal acts. Key topics include animal communication, predator-prey interactions, reproductive strategies, and social dynamics. The course combines theoretical frameworks with practical observations, enabling students to analyze behaviors in both controlled and natural environments. The weekly lab involves hands-on experiments with both invertebrate and vertebrate systems to test fundamental behavioral questions. Through interactive lectures and lab-based activities, students will apply the scientific method to the study of ethology, preparing them for careers in biology, zoology, conservation, and environmental science. Ideal for those passionate about understanding the intricacies of animal life and behavior, as well as those thinking of a career in veterinary medicine. Satisfies Biology major requirement as a Group B lab or an elective. Satisfies Psychology major requirement as a Research Methods course in the Cognitive/Neuroscience category. Prerequisites & Notes Successful completion of BIO 112/114/116 or permission of instructor is required.
