Catalog description
Hormones are critically important for integrating internal physiology and the brain with the environment. This course will examine neuroendocrine mechanisms in humans and non-human animals, focusing especially on fundamentals of the endocrine system in vertebrates, sexual differentiation/puberty, reproduction, parental care, social behavior, homeostasis, biological rhythms, and stress. We will integrate multiple levels of biological organization, from molecules to organisms, to understand interactions among hormones, the nervous system, physiology, behavior, and environment. This course will also address hormonal processes, and the behaviors they regulate, as they relate to broader societal conversations about sex and gender, individual health and well-being, medicine, evolution, and environmental conservation. Satisfies Group B Biology major requirement. Satafies Gender and Sexuality Studies major and minor requirement. Satisfies Psychology major requirement. Satisfies Neuroscience major and minor requirement. Prerequisites & Notes Successful completion of BIO 111/113/115 and 112/114/116, or permission of the instructor. Successful completion of BIO 240 is recommended.
