Curanderx Aesthetics: Merging the Practice of Art and Healing Traditions
Davidson College · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This interdisciplinary research and practice course merges the power of art with the healing traditions of curanderismo , a traditional Latin American folk healing system. Using curanderismo as a blueprint, students will explore transformative artistic practices through a diverse range of media, including sculpture, performance, and installation. Students will blend these cultural elements into contemporary art-making, creating new forms of expression that transcend conventional art practices. The course will feature innovative techniques such as digital fabrication, AI, soft sculpture, and sound experiments, providing students with a toolkit for crafting immersive experiences that unite art and healing. Through hands-on projects, critical discussions, and collaborative work, students will develop a deeper understanding of how merging artistic and healing practices can reshape contemporary art and offer pathways for personal and communal restoration.
