This course provides an overview of behaviors, mostly but not exclusively in animals, and emphasizes how behaviors can have a genetic foundation and therefore evolve. Behaviors that are emphasized in this class include (but are not limited to) those associated with reproduction, feeding and predator avoidance, and environmental tolerances, in other words, vital to fitness. This evolutionary approach allows the students to make phylogenetic connections between behaviors seen in different but related organisms, as well as become aware of how a number of behaviors vital to life have (not surprisingly) arisen multiple times in the evolutionary history of organisms. (F even-numbered years) Prerequisites: Biology 1108K.
