Catalog description

Term hours: 54 lecture. This course introduces students to the scientific study of language by providing insight into the structure of language, introducing methods of linguistic analysis, and overviewing the sub-fields of linguistics studies. This includes surveys of the sounds, structure, function, and development of language, the differences among languages as well as linguistic universals, and the study of language in connection with its cognitive, social, and cultural function. Recommended for students interested in majoring in foreign language, English, Linguistics, or future bi-lingual teachers, but open to all students. Pass/No Pass/Letter Grade Option. (UC/CSU, CALGETC, AA GE).
