Term hours: 54 lecture. This course is a survey of the history of the Western hemisphere from its discovery to the wars of independence. Emphasis is placed upon European conquest, the interaction of Europeans with Native American and African cultures, and the planting of colonial societies in the New World. Spanish America, Brazil, Canada, and the United States are compared as to their socio-cultural, economic, and political development during the colonial and independence periods.
