Catalog description

Term hours: 54 lecture. This course is a critical study of French and Francophone culture through film, analyzing classic and contemporary works as both art and cultural expressions. Students examine films within historical, socio-political, and cinematic contexts, focusing on cultural relevance and representation of the Francophone diaspora. This course will provide students with insights into French and Francophone culture and identity as well as techniques for the critical analysis of film. Ten to twelve films will be viewed for analysis and discussion of key figures and movements in Francophone cinema. Lectures and class discussions in English. All films with English subtitles. Pass/No Pass/Letter Grade Option. (CSU/UC, AA GE, Cal-GETC).
