Maternal mental health and substance use are among the leading causes of maternal mortality in the U.S. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) affect up to 1 in 5 new mothers, with 80% of cases going undiagnosed due to stigma, shame, and lack of resources. While recent policy changes aim to improve outcomes, the clinical workforce remains underprepared to effectively identify and treat these conditions. The goal of this course is to equip students with advanced skills and knowledge to identify perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) in pregnant and postpartum individuals, and to apply best practices in screening, referral, and treatment.
