Mixed Methods In Educational Research
Hunter College · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course will provide an overview of mixed methods theory, research, and techniques in education–with an emphasis on data integration across quantitative and qualitative data sources. The course will begin with an overview of core mixed methods concepts, theory, and basic research designs that are inclusive of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods (i.e., ethnographic work, case studies, semi-structured interviews, surveys, multivariate analysis). We will discuss and evaluate how these varied data sources can be used to inform each other to enhance research designs–through course readings and research. We will also discuss data integration methods (i.e., joint displays) that facilitate meaningful collection, analysis, and reporting of mixed methods data. The course requires students to have quantitative and qualitative data plans in hand that will be refined, workshopped, and enhanced throughout the course.
