Methods for Teaching Reading to Students with Disabilities in Grades P-12 (KC)

Catalog description

This is a methods course focused on meeting the literacy based instructional needs of students with disabilities in Grades P-12. It provides information and guided practice in literacy based instructional approaches and specific methodologies in reading. This course provides skills, strategies, approaches and guided practice that addresses the needs of diverse learners. Teacher candidates will examine causes of reading failure, and will engage in methods, strategies and approaches to strategically improve reading and identified writing skills. From this base of knowledge and guided practice, teacher candidates will be prepared to teach reading for diverse learners and make informed decisions regarding implementation of evidence-based literacy strategies in areas of phonemic awareness, decoding and encoding, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. This is a Key Course (KC) within the School of Education. A grade of B or above will be required to pass the course. This course may be repeated only once.
