Catalog description

Communication issues will be discussed so that difficulties will be better understood and expected. The components of good quality will be thoroughly treated, in particular the concept of fidelity. Through intensive practice of short simultaneous passages, students will try to accurately reproduce meaning in the target language without distortions, omissions, additions or inappropriate literalism. They will learn to identify and produce correct language register and style. They will analyze the different syntactic structures of English and Spanish through pattern sentences (expressing time, distance, emotion, sequences of adjectives, etc.) and learn to restructure units of thought (parts of sentences) so that greatest flexibility is maintained. The relation between interpreting and performance will be discussed. Students will learn to handle ""stage fright"" or stress related to multi-tasking at increasing speeds with diverse subject matter. The concept of ""coping tactics"" will be explored.
