Gender, Globalization, and Asians/Asian Americans

Catalog description

This course will explore the nexus of globalization and gender through the lens of working class and migrant Asians/Asian Americans, with a case study of the history and realities of gendered transnational Filipino labor migration. Through a multidisciplinary lens, including legal, sociological, economic, and political frameworks, we will do a close study of global neoliberal economic policies, migration policy, the Philippine Labor Export Policy, U.S. foreign policy, and U.S. immigration policy and their impact on gender roles in the family, the nation, and the workplace. We will ground our study in the concrete impacts these political systems have on Asian/Asian American communities and familiarize ourselves with social movements that have grown to defend the rights of oppressed and marginalized communities in our ever-globalizing world.
