Critical Approaches to Teaching Reading and the Study of Literature (KC)

Catalog description

This course will explore issues regarding the theory and practice of teaching English/Language Arts at the secondary level. The course explores language and literacy development in the ELA classroom as tied to social processes and varied purposes. Informed by research on historically responsive literacy, you will engage with the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to plan and implement curriculum and instruction framed by a focus on identity, skills, intellect, and criticality. Candidates will learn ways of teaching adolescents the skills of writing (creative to expository), reading, responding to literature, listening, speaking, assessing, and exploring new media while considering student and community contexts. Candidates will also explore the politics of language and teaching ELA. ● This Key Course requires a grade of B or better to pass. ● Any student who receives a grade of F or WU in this class will not be permitted to continue in the program. ● This course may be repeated only once
