Ethnic and Cultural Identity Theories

Explores current psychological research and theory on ethnic and cultural identity. As this society has become more multi-cultural, the question of ethnic and cultural identity has increased in importance, as shown by the explosion of research in this field. The goal of this course is to expose students to current psychological research and theory on ethic and cultural identity. The current status of research and theory in these areas is examined, along with the application of these theories to specific groups. Topics include: a) the components of ethnic racial, and cultural identity; 2) historical and conceptual issues in the field; c) theoretical and research approaches to studying ethnic identity; d) the state of theory and research on ethnic identity in relation to particular cultural groups; e) racial and ethnic socialization; f) language and ethnic identity; and g) applications of the ethnic identity construct.
