Social and Historical Roots of Art and Culture
Hunter College · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
This seminar examines the social and historical context that has propelled and been influenced by art, media and culture from the 15th century to the present. Our core assumption is that that the production of all forms of culture - material and non-material - is a fundamental way that we struggle to make sense of a world in which social change constantly challenges taken-for-granted reality. Special emphasis is given to the unique role of the artist as producer of culture, and to the rich inter-disciplinary literature that has examined the creative process and the practical and theoretical challenges faced by artists in a complex society.
