In December 2013, the United Nations proclaimed the years 2015 – 2024, the International Decade for People of African Descent (Decade). The Decade is one of several mechanisms at the United Nations for advancing the full range of human rights for people of African descent. More than halfway into the Decade, a disturbing few know of its existence and progress on the goals of the Decade is constrained. The purpose of this course is to explore and understand the use of the Decade, the International Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD), as well as other special mandates at the United Nations, in advancing intersectional racial justice and human rights. The course will center the experiences of women, particularly African descendant women. This course is cross-listed with the Department of Africana & Puerto Rican/Latino Studies
