Immigration has been and continues to be central to American history, everyday life and its future. Asian Americans and immigration and immigrant rights are a key part of that story. This course starts by studying the evolution of American immigration and the related policies that governed, shaped and restricted immigrant flows, and immigrants’ interactions with key institutions of American life, e.g., labor, education, and politics, along with the impact for the United States. A key theme of this course is the multiple levels at which immigration and immigrant policies operate. What this means is that immigrants and their children live amid “a patchwork of policy contexts.” Our goal is to unpack immigration and immigrant policies in these diverse policy contexts, from the federal to the state to the local.
