This course examines the grassroots struggle to gain equality and justice in the United States, viewed as a social protest movement, from the perspective of cultural anthropology. The course will focus on the major events, themes and issues of the Civil Rights Movement and examine their effect in challenging the American concept ofdemocracy; in changing those who participated in it; and in spawning other social movements that transformed American society and culture.
