FILM AND LITERATURE IN POST-WAR SPAIN

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) has been represented by many artists, both within Spain and internationally. The conflict drew volunteers, reporters, and artists from around the world, as it is widely regarded as a precursor to World War II. This class will examine four novels that explore the destruction of Spain, the harsh dictatorship that followed, and the transition to an establishment of a democratic regime at the end of the 20th century. We will critically analyze various fictional perspectives, particularly focusing on the concept of historical memory and the female gaze. Topics include sexuality, motherhood, resistance to and subversion of traditional representations of women, the construction of a new identity in democratic Spain, and the examination of 21st-century patriarchies.
