Counseling Issues in Substance Use

Catalog description

This course provides an overview of the field of substance use counseling with an emphasis on developing a detailed understanding and foundation of skills in the use of specific strategies, procedures, and interventions in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of substance use and misuse. The course will summarize key points drawn from the following areas: the American experience with substance misuse and recovery, theoretical explanations for understanding substance use, basic pharmacology and neuroscience, and assessment and treatment of issues specific to substance use counseling. The course will also provide a general overview and introduction to the psychopharmacology of alcohol, and major drugs and classes of misused substances as well as prescription drugs commonly used.
