Catalog description

Women and Violence is an undergraduate course that explores gender violence in its multiple forms from both a national and a global perspective. This class covers current theories and research pertaining to violence against women and the factors that contribute to it. Methods to address and alleviate this worldwide problem are also presented. Particular emphasis will be placed on exploring gender violence from a psychological perspective, examining risk and protective factors, and the consequences of being violently victimized, with the goal of understanding human behavior and interaction. By the end of this course students will be able to: 1. Describe the types of gender violence across the lifespan from a national and international perspective; 2. Describe the prevalence, forms, and consequences of violence against women; 3. Describe individual, family, community, national, and international level challenges and interventions to address gender violence; 4. Critically analyze the issues that create and maintain gender violence and have knowledge of actions being taken to end it.
