Introduction to School Psychology

Catalog description

The primary goal of this course is to introduce you to the unique and exciting field of school psychology. Very broadly speaking, school psychology blends together the fields of education and psychology, where through practice and research, professionals strive to improve and strengthen the lives of children, adolescents, and their families, as well as foster connections between families, schools, and communities. By the end of this semester, you should have a deep understanding of the roles and responsibilities of school psychologists (e.g., assessment, consultation, counseling, intervention, applied research), the history/origins of the field, training and credentialing matters (e.g., certification, licensing), legal requirements and ethical issues germane to the practice of school psychology, as well as other relevant topics within the profession (e.g., common child/adolescent mental health conditions and their presentation in schools, learning disabilities, special education eligibility, bullying).
